Staff Attorney
The Judge David L. Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law seeks an attorney to join a team of Bazelon Center and private counsel working with the District of Columbia, under a settlement agreement in Blackman v. DC, to reform the city’s special education system. The attorney will also spend significant time working on other litigation initiatives of the Center. The Bazelon Center, a national legal advocacy organization founded in 1972, is a leader in the movement to promote community integration and self-determination for people with mental disabilities. The Center’s staff includes seven lawyers, four policy advocates, and other professionals.
The position will be for two years, with the possibility of a mutual extension beyond two years. See www.bazelon.org/newsroom/2007/Blackman12-13-07.htm for more information about Blackman. The Center’s other litigation focuses on: enforcing the Americans with Disabilities Act, expanding community care options in public service systems, preventing the incarceration of individuals with mental illnesses, enforcing Medicaid entitlements, and reforming children’s services.
Applicants should have a strong commitment to the protection of individual rights as well as excellent analytic and writing skills. Prefer applicants who have practiced law for at least two years; however, will consider individuals without practice experience. A background in public interest work is preferred.
Salary depends on qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits. Individuals with disabilities and members of minority groups are especially encouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Please see www.bazelon.org/staffattorney to determine whether the job remains open or has been filled.
